Conclusion These 2 case reports emphasize the difficulties of the neuro-radiological diagnosis and of the decision-making for the management of hemorrhagic dissection of the ACA. The second patient was surgically treated but, unfortunately, the wrapping of the dissected arterial wall could not prevent the recurrence of the hemorrhage. On the other hand, the follow-up showed that the dissection tends to heal spontaneously with restoration of a normal arterial lumen and that the conservative treatment was effective with a good outcome in both cases. The literature review (table 1) and our own experience seem to suggest that this therapeutic option could be safely proposed for the management of hemorrhagic dissections of the ACA. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is sensitive to the oxidative state of haemoglobin, as oxy-and deoxyhaemoglobin have different magnetic properties – the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) effect. Indeed, functional MR imaging techniques are sufficiently sensitive to the BOLD effect that they can be used to assess cerebrovascular reactivity with a simple breath-holding test or CO 2 challenge [1] .

Rapid Measurement of Oxygen Extraction Fraction (OEF) Maps using a Combined Multiple Gradient and Spin Echo Bolus Contrast Sequence

Introduction: In the last few years, we have developed an MRI method that allows high-resolution quantitative measurements of the level of blood oxygenation (SO2) in the brain [1]. The technique is based on the specific extraction of the oxygenation information from baseline T2* measurements using a mathematical model and independent measurements of T2, B0, and the cerebral blood volume (CBV). ...

Old microbleeds are a potential risk factor for cerebral bleeding after ischemic stroke: a gradient-echo T2*-weighted brain MRI study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE T2*-weighted gradient-echo MRI is known to detect old microbleeds (MBs), considered indicative of microangiopathy. MBs might be a potential risk factor for early cerebral bleeding (CB) after ischemic stroke. Therefore, we assessed the impact of MBs on the occurrence of CB after cerebral infarction. METHODS We included prospectively stroke patients who had documented isc...

Determination of oxygen extraction fraction using magnetic resonance imaging in canine models with internal carotid artery occlusion

Perfusion of the penumbra tissue below the flow threshold for functional disturbance but above that for the maintenance of morphological integrity is the target for therapy in acute ischaemic stroke. The measurement of the oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) may provide a direct assessment of tissue viability, so that irreversible tissue damage and penumbra can be reliably identified. By using an ...

Comparison the Accuracy of Fetal Brain Extraction from T2-Half-Fourier Acquisition Single-Shot Turbo Spin-Echo (HASTE) MR Image with T2-True Fast Imaging with Steady State Free Precession (TRUFI) MR Image by Level Set Algorithm

Background Access to appropriate images of fetal brain can greatly assist to diagnose of probable abnormalities. The aim of this study was to compare the suitability of T2-True Fast Imaging with Steady State Free Precession (T2-TRUFI), and T2-Half-Fourier Acquisition Single-Shot Turbo Spin-Echo (T2- HASTE( magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to extract the fetal brain using the level set algorithm...

Perfluorocarbon Enhanced Glasgow Oxygen Level Dependent (GOLD) Magnetic Resonance Metabolic Imaging Identifies the Penumbra Following Acute Ischemic Stroke

The ability to identify metabolically active and potentially salvageable ischaemic penumbra is crucial for improving treatment decisions in acute stroke patients. Our solution involves two complementary novel MRI techniques (Glasgow Oxygen Level Dependant (GOLD) Metabolic Imaging), which when combined with a perfluorocarbon (PFC) based oxygen carrier and hyperoxia can identify penumbra due to d...
